Sleep and I just don’t get along. I sleep at the most ridiculous hours (I usually sleep at around 2am) and I often don’t get any longer than 6 hours of sleep a night! Even though I love sleeping, I just have issues getting to bed. But March is National Bed Month and to raise awareness to encourage people to get a full nights sleep, Holland & Barrett sent me a box* containing some goodies that’ll help me sleep like a baby. Our cells rebuild and repair themselves while we sleep, but without a good nights sleep our body doesn’t repair itself so our skin looks dull, dry and sometimes spotty and these products assist our bodies while we sleep and also aid us in getting that good night of sleep we all need:
Black Cherry Concentrate – Cherries contain the sleep hormone melatonin so a couple of spoons of this mixed with a glass of warm water an hour before bedtime will help you ease into a natural sleep.
Wonder Oil – I love a good multitasking oil, and boy.. this is good! It’s a mix of olive, sunflower seed, wheat germ, sesame, jojoba and sweet almond oils with lemon, orange and grapefruit. I’d use this by adding a few drops to my bath and also for body massage straight after.
Lavender Oil – Now this is a no-brainer, absolutely everyone knows that lavender will knock you out to sleep in no time!
Dr. Organic Moroccan Argan Oil Night Cream – This night cream is rich in antioxidants, vitamins including C and antioxidants because of the combination of argan oil and three organic extracts native to several countries in Africa, kigelia, roselle and baobab.
I also got a little advice from the Holland & Barrett nutrionist, Kate Butler to avoid eating a large meal especially one with refine carbohydrates within 2-4 hours of bedtime and no caffeine whatsoever. I put this all to the test, but did it work? Did the city that never sleeps personified aka me actually have a good nights sleep thanks to these products and tips? Well, I’m actually surprised to report back that I actually had a great nights sleep and I woke up feeling refreshed and repaired which is a far cry from how I usually feel when I wake up: tired, cranky and dying to go back to sleep. I think the smell of Wonder Oil and lavender really helped to get me to relax and it was nice to drink a warm drink before hitting the sack. I’ll definitely be doing this a lot more, and with exam season around the corner sleep will be a complete myth but maybe it’s time to change that…
